Polestar has extended its Grid Rewards programme to Germany and France, allowing electric vehicle owners to cut home charging costs by shifting energy use to off-peak periods, a move that underscores the growing link between carmakers and Europe's strained electricity networks.

Under the scheme, operated in partnership with Octopus Energy, drivers of the Polestar 2 and Polestar 4 who sign up for an Intelligent Octopus energy contract in Germany can reduce per-session charging costs by up to 50 per cent, yielding annual savings of as much as €300. The system works by adjusting when a vehicle charges in response to live electricity prices, local grid conditions and household demand, rewarding owners financially for easing pressure on the network at peak times.

The more notable development is a shift to car-controlled smart charging. Until now, accessing dynamic charging required a compatible home wallbox, a cost and complexity that limited uptake. The latest update allows the vehicle itself to manage charging schedules without specialist hardware, responding directly to energy price signals. For Polestar, removing that barrier opens the programme to a significantly wider share of its European customer base.

Olivier Loedel, head of product software management at Polestar, said reducing ownership costs at a time of elevated electricity prices across Europe was the central motivation, adding that the company was committed to making smart charging accessible to all customers regardless of their home setup.

The programme also aligns charging with periods of higher renewable generation on the grid, giving it a dual appeal for drivers seeking to manage both costs and carbon footprints. With most EV charging still taking place at home, the update addresses a practical concern that has weighed on ownership economics.

Grid Rewards is now live in six European markets, including Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, with smart charging available across 12 markets in total.

The expansion comes as European carmakers face mounting pressure to differentiate on software and energy services, not just range or performance. As grid complexity increases alongside EV adoption, the ability to integrate vehicles into broader energy systems is emerging as a competitive front, one where partnerships with energy suppliers may prove as important as battery technology.
