Four European charging operators, Fastned, Ionity, Electra and Atlante, have created the Spark Alliance, a joint system that allows drivers to use their combined high-speed networks through a single access point. The move aims to simplify charging across the region, where fragmentation of apps and payment tools has long frustrated electric-vehicle owners.

The partners said the new system already enables use of more than 11,000 chargers in 25 countries through one app, with access expanding across regions through mid 2025. Fastned described the alliance as a practical step toward meeting customer expectations for more predictable charging. Ionity said the arrangement is intended to improve reliability and convenience while supporting Europe’s wider clean energy targets.

The initiative comes as EU and national regulators introduce stricter rules on station uptime, price transparency and corridor coverage. By planning infrastructure together, the four groups aim to reduce duplication and respond more directly to policy requirements. Electra said shared groundwork should also release capital for quicker network expansion, helping operators present more stable business models to investors in a still developing sector.

Some industry observers caution that closer cooperation could weaken competition or limit differences in pricing and features. Supporters argue that common access only removes operational clutter and will still allow each network to compete on charging speed, on site services and customer support.

As interapp access expands through 2025, the Spark Alliance may influence governments, carmakers and competing operators to pursue further collaboration. The partners expect that a more unified system will help turn Europe’s charging network from a patchwork of tools into a more coherent backbone for electric transport.
