Europe Races to Unify Its Fractured EV Charging Map

Spark Alliance unites Ionity, Fastned, and Atlante to streamline EV charging across Europe, urging operators to adopt shared standards for smoother expansion

EV charging leaders join hands to form the Spark Alliance, unifying Europe’s fast-charging networks.

A coalition of four fast-charging operators is seeking to bring greater coherence to Europe’s fragmented electric vehicle infrastructure through a shared digital platform that would allow drivers to locate and compare chargers across borders.

The Spark Alliance, formed by Ionity, Fastned, Atlante and Electra, links thousands of high-speed charging points in 25 countries, creating one of the region’s largest combined networks. Its initial aim is to build a common digital layer that can surface real-time information from all partner stations.

The platform is live but not yet fully functional. Roaming remains limited, meaning drivers can identify the correct charger but often still need the original operator’s app or card to begin a session. A single interface for payments is planned but not available.

Even partial integration marks a shift for an industry long divided by proprietary systems. Rising EV adoption and government pressure for cleaner transport have reduced tolerance for fragmented services. Fastned chief Michiel Langezaal said interoperability was now “a must, not a luxury”. Ionity executives added that sharing data on outages, usage and maintenance would allow operators to manage their assets more effectively.

Analysts say greater coordination could ease some of the uncertainty that early EV users have faced, particularly on long-distance routes. They note, however, that technical standards differ across regions and that national regulations often complicate cross-border services. Smaller charging companies also worry that alignment among large operators could marginalise them.

Supporters argue that clearer rules and shared systems would help the entire sector by making charging easier for consumers and reducing operational friction.

For now, the Alliance has set the foundations for deeper integration. Further progress will depend on resolving technical barriers and harmonising regulatory requirements, steps that could determine how quickly Europe’s drivers experience a more consistent charging network.
